Katherine Ruth Martin Torbeck passed with peace and grace on Sunday, July 26, with her family by her side. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 44 years Albert Torbeck.
Katherine was born in Olney, Md., in 1929 to Oscar and Barbara Beuchert Martin who owned and operated Martin's Dairy of Olney, MD. They delivered milk and served ice cream to the Maryland and DC residents for several years, including Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt.
Katherine attended Sherwood High School, where she received the title of Miss Sherwood and was Treasure of her graduating class. She also met her future husband, Albert Torbeck, during her tenure at Sherwood. Katherine was a homemaker and real estate agent for Century 21, and Torbeck Realty, respectively, where she earned recognition as a million dollar salesperson.
She retired with her husband to Callao, VA. where they became avid crabbers and raised oysters. Katherine spent most of her spare time gardening and entertaining friends and family. She was happiest when she had a house full of visitors.
She is survived by her children: Christine L. Torbeck of Frederick, MD; Cynthia L. Torbeck and her husband Eldon J. Haught of Ocala, FL; and Stephen M. Torbeck and his wife Sarah, of Montross, VA; her grandchildren: Jennifer Ogg (Danny), Kevin Uebel (Lacy), Jordan Tippett and Lauren Yanike (Anders). She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren, a brother Clifton Martin of Comus, MD, and Josephine M. Mayne of Laytonsville, MD.
Predeceasing Katherine, besides her husband and parents, are her brothers, Calvin Martin, William Martin and David Martin, and one sister, Barbara Martin Wilkinson Furry.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at Glade United Church of Christ, 21 Fulton Avenue in Walkersville and one hour prior to services Thursday.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 30, at Glade United Church of Christ in Walkersville with Rev. Philip Neal Curran officiating. Burial will be at a later time in Brookeville Cemetery.
