Katherine A. Smith, 96, passed away September 14, 2016 at Lorien Life Care Center, Mount Airy, Maryland.
Born April 15, 1920 in Harrisonburg, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late William Henry and Irene May Giesey VanPelt. In 1926, her family moved to Washington, D.C. and lived there until 1962 when she met her husband, John S. Smith and followed him to the little village of “Long Corner” near Mt. Airy. They were married for 54 years on July 7, 1962.
Mrs. Smith worked for the Washington, D.C. government under Mayor Walter Washington as an administrative secretary in the Office of the Commissioners for 35 years.
She was a member of Howard Chapel-Ridgeville UMChurch and a member of the Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary logging in over 1,000 hours where she crocheted baby caps and blankets for preemie babies. She loved to crochet and sent blankets to the Linus Project also. She was an expert seamstress always keeping her family guessing what she would create next. Her and her husband loved to travel and would spend time at their cottage in Deep Creek, MD during the summer and travel to Florida during the winter. Her main focus was always her family, especially her husband John, as a loving caregiver to him after his illness in 1975.
She is survived by her husband, John S. Smith; son, Carlton L. Dixon and wife, B.J. of Mount Airy, MD; step-children Ruth Ann Worsham of York, PA and Kenneth E. Smith and wife, Lee of Stewartstown, PA; grandchildren Michael C. Dixon and Jennifer L. Wilson and husband, Darren; step-grandchildren Lisa Maldonado, Brian Worsham and wife Lauren, Danielle Smith and Heather Fitzpatrick and husband, Matt. Great- grandchildren Kelsey and Lauren Dixon; Nathen and Gracie Wilson; step-great grandchildren Alena Maldonado, Joshua and Alyssa Worsham; Ian Hargreaves and Gwenyth Fitzpatrick; sister-in-law, Irene Hardy; and long-time devoted neighbors Doris and Web Utz.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harry L. Dixon.
The family would like to thank Lorien and Gilchrist staff for the loving care given to Katherine.
The family will receive friends From 2-4 and 6-8 PM on Monday, September 19, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mt. Airy where funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 20 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Phillip R. Ayers officiating.
Interment will follow at the Howard Chapel Cemetery located 1970 Long Corner Road, Mount Airy, MD
