June Higdon

June I. (Lowman) Higdon, 86, of Brownsville, Maryland, passed from this life on Sunday, December 2, 2012 at her home while surrounded by her family.

Born on April 14, 1926, in Brownsville, she was the daughter of the late Roy Ellsworth and Mabel Josephine (Hoffmaster) Lowman.
She was a member of the Class of 1944 at Boonsboro High School, and joined the Cadet Nursing Program with the Washington County Hospital, graduating in 1947 as a Registered Nurse.
June was a member of Brownsville Church of the Brethren where she served as a Deaconess, and was a  member of the Golden Rule Fellowship, the Senior Citizens Group, and the Quilting Circle.
She was a homemaker and worked as a private duty nurse for family and friends in the Valley.  She also had worked as a shop keeper at the Armory House in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.
June was dedicated to her family and church, and served the community of Pleasant Valley her entire life.
She is survived by her loving husband, Leonard "Pete" U. Higdon of Brownsville; four children, Jean C. Rohr and husband V. Timothy of Sharpsburg, Maryland, Joan C. Howell of Needmore, Pennsylvania, Jennifer L. Carey of Brownsville, and Leonard "Lenny" E. Higdon and wife Marcie of Brownsville; one sister, Judith L. Wheeler of Aberdeen, Maryland; and two brothers, F. W. Lowman of Summerville, South Carolina and Dale L. Lowman of New Windsor, Maryland. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at the Brownsville Church of the Brethren, 1911 Rohrersville Road, Knoxville, Maryland. Final resting place ceremonies will follow at the Brownsville Heights Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, Maryland. The Family will also receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
Memorial donations may be made to the Scholarship Fund at Brownsville Church of the Brethren, 1911 Rohrersville Road, Knoxville, Maryland, 21758 or to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Avenue, Hagerstown, Maryland, 21742.
