Rear Admiral Julian Strong Lake III USN (Ret.), 90, died on March 2, 2013 at Homewood Nursing Home in Frederick, MD. He was a resident of Binghamton, NY for twenty two years until November 2012, when, after the death of his wife, Lucinda Ann Lake, he moved to Frederick.
Born on June 13, 1922 in South Boston, VA, to Julian Strong Lake, Jr. and Cary Stebbins Lake, he grew up in Newport News and Paces VA and attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute before joining the Navy in 1942. He entered flight school and became a night and all-weather fighter pilot. He served in World War II (Pacific Theater), the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He commanded the Navy’s first F4H Phantom II squadron. He also commanded a carrier air group on the USS Forrestal and later was the commanding officer of the USS John F. Kennedy. His final tour of duty was commander of Naval Electronics Systems Command. He was one of the foremost experts in electronic warfare, working with 21 allied countries to develop shared tactics for electronic countermeasures. He was the recipient of three Air Medals (World War II), the Bronze Star (Vietnam), and the Navy Commendation Medal (Korea). He was honored as a member emeritus of the Early and Pioneer Naval Aviators Association (The Golden Eagles). He attended George Washington University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs and graduated from the Naval War College.
After retiring from the Navy in 1976, Admiral Lake lived in California for fourteen years. He became the publisher of Countermeasures Magazine. He served on the board of directors and as president of the Association of Old Crows, electronic warfare’s professional organization. He also became a consultant for numerous defense contractors, wrote many articles and lectured on electronic warfare around the world. He moved to Binghamton, NY where he became active in many community service organizations, including being a Paul Harris Fellow with Binghamton’s Rotary Club and a member of the vestry of Christ Episcopal Church.
He is survived by the family of his second wife, Lucinda Lake, stepfather-in-law Cecil F. Popolo, of Endicott, NY, and sister-in-law Lisa Conklin Popolo of New Rochelle, NY.
He is also survived by his first wife, Barbara Mae Brooks Dougherty, of Potomac Falls, VA, and their children, Julia Ann Lake, of Virginia Beach, VA, Diane Lake Riordan of Frederick, MD, and Julian Strong Lake IV, of McLouth, KS. He was predeceased by Clara Virginia Vadersen, of Virginia Beach, VA, also a child from his first marriage. He is beloved by his seven grandchildren: Cameron Vadersen Jacob, Kevin Riordan, Scott White, Andrew Vadersen, Penny Riordan, Jeanette Lake, Jessica Lake, and one great grandchild, Morgan Jacob.
A Memorial Service will be held on March 23, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church in Binghamton, with the Rev. Janet Watrous officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Christ Church Renovation Fund
