Joyce Ann "Joy" Shrader, 83, of Walkersville, passed from this life on Sunday, May 27, 2018 at her residence. She was the wife of Capt. Joseph N. Shrader, her husband of 12 years.
Born on July 11, 1934, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Harry Leonard and Doris W. Gunkel Burkheimer.
Joy attended the Blessed Julie Biliak Country Day School and went on to Trinity Prep School, both in Illchester, MD. Joyce, or Joy, as she liked to be called, grew up in Howard County. She started life in an apartment above "The Colonial Stables", a restaurant and bar in Baltimore City that was owned and operated by her parents. Before long they bought a farm where Joy shared her love of horses with her father. She soon began showing ponies and became a champion rider for The Maryland Pony Club. Joy had many passions: music (she played piano), dancing, horses, tennis and travel to name a few.
When Joy and Joe (a retired Coast Guard Captain) were married, they traveled extensively abroad, and settled in Walkersville, MD. They were very active with the Coast Guard Community and spent many luncheons, dinners and weekends away with their extended Coast Guard family, as well as with the Military Officers Association of America and The Catoctin Club.
Surviving in addition to her husband are beloved children: Melanie Berndt and husband William, C. Robert Mercaldo, Jr. and the late Francis X. Mercaldo; she was the doting grandmother of William J, Berndt, Tara W. Berndt, Patricia Mercaldo and Luca G. Mercaldo; she was much loved by her step children Mark Shrader and wife Kimberly, the late John Shrader and wife Lynne, Michelle McDonald and husband Dan and Norbert Shrader; Step grandchildren: Brittany Richman (Joe), Ashley Shrader Lee (Anecia), Joe McDonald, Kristen Wilson (Brandon) and Michael Shrader (Tara); step great grandchildren: Conner Richman, Georgia Wilson, Gage Wilson, Macy Shrader, Nolan Shrader, Braylon Shrader, Raymond McGuirk, Niki Ward and Sean Ward.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 PM on Sunday, June 3, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD 21702.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:00 AM on Monday, June 4, at St. Louis Catholic Church, 12500 Clarksville Pike (Rt. 108) Clarksville, MD 21029 . Interment will follow at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens in Timonium, MD.
