Our beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend, Joseph D. Wivell, Sr. went home to be with his heavenly family on January 23, 2011. Joe was born in Emmitsburg, the son of the late Roy J. and Helen L. (Guise) Wivell, Sr. He was the widower of Catherine (Murph) Shorb (82), Nancy A. Hallman (86) and Kathleen R. Mulcaney (10).
Joe was a wonderful caring, giving person; his passion was dairy farming, retiring in 2009 at age 81. He belonged to many agricultural organizations, and served many years on the board of directors for the Thurmont Co-op, also as a committee member for the ASCS, a branch of the Department of Agriculture. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Shrine, where he served as an usher for most of his adult life. He served his country proudly in the US Army during the Korean War. He enjoyed playing cards with his brothers and sisters, camping at "Savage" and spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his children, Joseph, Jr. (Cindy), Michael (Karen), Martin E., Catherine (Wayne), Philip (Shelly), Terry (Rachael). Stepchildren, Mary Wolfe (Ron), Edward (Linda), Dan, Sam, Brenda, Betty, Linda and Donna (Michael). Also, 23 grandchildren, and 23 great grandchildren. Fourteen brothers and sisters, Jim (Lorraine), Hen, Bernard, Tom (Maryjo), Donald (Mary), Paul (Mary), Helen (Edward), Dave (Betty), Therese (Phil), Jenny (Ronnie), Dick (Pat), Joan (John), Sam (Jocelyn), Roy, Jr (Rose), sisters-in-law Mary and Helen, brother-in-law Fred and many nieces and nephews. Many family, friends and neighbors will miss his presence. He was preceded in death by his son Bobby, brothers, Bob, Charles and baby brother Roy, sisters Pat and Margie.
The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E, Main St., Thurmont on Thursday, January 27, from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, January 28, at 11:00 am from St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, St. Anthony’s Road, Emmittsburg with Father John Lesnick as celebrant.

Pallbearers will be Michael, Jeremy, Justin, and Jared Wivell, Ben Lambert and Patrick Reaver, Honorary bearers will be his granddaughters.
The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to St. Anthony’s Catholic Shrine, 1650 St. Anthony’s Road, Emmitsburg, MD 21727.
