Joseph “Bernie” Vallandingham, age 80, of Frederick, MD died Thursday, September 6, 2012 at Kline Hospice House from complications of Parkinson’s disease. Bernie was the husband of Pat Vallandingham to whom he had been married for 54 years.
He was born December 29, 1931 in Baltimore, MD to loving parents Joseph and Marie Vallandingham. Bernie grew up in Annapolis and graduated from Mount St. Joseph’s High School. He studied Civil Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. He served in the army for three years, with a small intelligence group, as a sergeant, in the 18th Airborne Corp.
Bernie spent several years as a project manager for Baltimore’s Consolidated Engineers, ten and a half years at Hughes Corp. as Executive Vice President, and in 1969 came to work for the Frederick Construction Co. Three years later, he was president of Frederick Contractors, Inc. where he worked until he retired in 1991.
Bernie was well known in Frederick and served the community in various ways. He was past President of the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce, Frederick Kiwanis Club, Associated Builders and Contractors of MD, Inc., the YMCA and Historical Society. He also served on the Vocational –Technical Advisory Council and the American Arbitration Association, as well as the Frederick County Job Training Agency and Housing Advisory Panel. Bernie was also a representative to the White House Small Business Commission.
Bernie enjoyed sports. He coached and advised the county’s first lacrosse team, the Frederick Stickmen.
He was a devoted husband and father. Bernie treasured time spent with his children and grandchildren. He travelled the world with his loving wife and best friend, Pat. Together they visited all seven continents. For thirty years, Bernie enjoyed yearly visits to Bethany Beach with a close group of friends. He also enjoyed time with his ATO Fraternity brothers and wives for more than fifty years.
Bernie is lovingly remembered by his children, Peggy Kane and friend Joel McLoughlin; Joseph Vallandingham; Ann Vallandingham and friend Clark Frese; Jim Vallandingham and wife Jenny; Carol Turvin and husband Mark; and six grandchildren, Emily Kane, Justin Delise, Sarah Delise, Rachael Vallandingham , Taylor Vallandingham and Anna Turvin. He is also remembered by his sister, Mary McGeehan and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life and visitation with family will be held on Sunday, October 7th at 1:00 p.m. at the Delaplaine Visual Arts Center at 40 S. Carroll St. Frederick, MD.
