Joseph D. Hodgkins, 90, born December 19, 1924, passed away June 9, 2015 at the Gettysburg Center in Gettysburg, PA.
He retired from the US Navy March 4, 1965, after serving for 23 years. He was a veteran of World War II, Korean War and Viet Nam. During his 23 years of service, he collected several awards and medals including; 3 letters of commendation, 6 Good Conduct Awards, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (Bronze Star with 3 stars), World War II Victory Medal, United Nations Service Medal (Asia clasp), Army Distinguished Unit Medal, and an American Campaign Medal.
He was a proud member of American Legion Post 191 and also a proud member of the VFW Post 10076, both in Mt. Airy, MD.
He was proceeded in death by his wife, Joan Lee Mary Hodgkins, and his son, Joseph D. Hodgkins, Jr.
He is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Martin; sons, Denis Hodgkins and wife, Vicki, Mark Hodgkins and wife, Sharon, and Kevin Hodgkins and wife, Mary Jo; he is also survived by four grandchildren, Grace Martin, Ashley Rippeon, Andrew Hodgkins and Caleb Smith.
Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, June 14, 2015 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 East Main Street, Thurmont, MD.
A memorial service will be held 12 p.m. Monday, June 15 at the Stauffer Funeral Home in Thurmont. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
