Joseph Manuel "Joe" Gonzalez, age 87, of Buhrman Drive West, Waynesboro, PA, passed into Heaven peacefully with his entire family at his side on Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, at Waynesboro Hospital.
Born Dec. 4, 1921 in Buffalo, NY, he was a son of the late Andrew and Concepcion Gonzalez.
Joe was married on Nov. 1, 1943 to Madge L. Jones Gonzalez, who preceded him in death on Aug. 28, 1996.
He had been employed for 30 years with Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown, retiring in 1981.
Joe was a veteran of World War II and Korea, serving with the U.S. Army. He participated in the D-day invasion of the beaches in France and received the Bronze Star.
Joe was a member of Clopper-Michael Post 10 American Legion in Boonsboro and Hagerstown VFW Post. He will be dearly missed by his family and was a wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Joe is survived by three daughters, Bonnie J. Hawbaker and husband Ronald of Boonsboro, Carol A. Brown and husband Richard of Waynesboro, PA, and Jeannie Gonzalez and special friend Anthony Carrozza of Frederick, MD; one brother, Manuel Gonzalez of Buffalo, NY; six grandchildren, Dwayne A. Hawbaker and wife Kim of Keedysville, Andrea L. Turner of Boonsboro, Earle F. Geisbert III of Frederick, Nikki E. Brown of Waynesboro, James A. Brown of Gettysburg, PA, and Rebecca L. Fuchs of Atlanta, GA; nine great-grandchildren, Ashlyn, Alli and Addison Hawbaker, Aaron, Alex and Amanda Turner, Adam and Michael Fuchs and Kolbie Brown; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Rose and Carmen.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Friday at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home in Boonsboro. The Rev. Bob Cook will officiate. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6 to 8 P.M. at the funeral home.
