Mr. Joseph "Joe" Hooker Clabaugh, 93, of Rocky Ridge, passed away Thursday, May 30, 2013 at his home. He was the husband of Shirley Long Clabaugh for 65 years.
Born December 28, 1919 to the late Elmer and Carrie Lewis Clabaugh at Clabaughs Orchard, now Orchard Hills.
He went in the CCC in the thirties, then the service in the 40’s. He was sent to Hawaii, Phillippines, Manila and Guam, returning to the states in 1948. He was assigned to Andrews AFB where he was married, May 1. He was there until 1953 and then was sent to Greenland for 14 months. He returned home and was sent to Topeka, Kansas until late 56, having orders for England for 3 yrs. He returned to the states in 59, was sent to Peru, Indiana, retiring in April of 63, after 21 years. He then went to work with Civil service at Fort Ritchie for 18 years, not liking retirement he worked at Mt. St. Mary’s for 10 years . He was a life member of American Legion Post 168 and Rocky Ridge Fire Dept. where he loved to work at the carnival and bingo. He enjoyed fishing and his welding shop buddies.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter Chris Clabaugh of Rocky Ridge, her daughter Jennifer Miller and husband Todd and daughter Alison of Colorado Springs, CO, son Dennis of Mt. Gretna, PA, son Gerald “Jerry”, children Carter and Sam of Chestertown MD., William “Bill” and wife Jane and children Esther and Sam of Mass, son James “Jim” son Lukas of Rocky Ridge, brother Ray of Littlestown, PA, sisters Laura Tinney of Taneytown and Lottie Bostian and Edward “Buddy” of Thurmont. He was preceded in death by his brothers Lewis, Clifford, Peter, John, a sister Carrie "Sissy" and a daughter-in-law Kim.
The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main Street, Thurmont on Monday, June 3, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm, where services will be held Tuesday, June 4, at 11:00 am.
Interment Creagerstown Cemetery.
