Joseph Freolia Brown, Jr., 90, of Myersville, Maryland, died Wednesday, October 13, 2010, at Northampton Manor Nursing Home. He is survived by his wife of 66 years Anna Lee Stark Brown.

Born August 27, 1920, in Frostburg, Maryland, he was the son of the late Joseph Freolia Brown and Ann Angela Byrnes Brown.

Mr. Brown served our country in World War II in the United State Navy as a Naval Aviator in the Pacific Theater and as a flight instructor in Pensacola, Florida. He remained in the Naval Reserve, retiring as Lieutenant Commander after 20 years of service.

During his career as a professional land surveyor, he established J. F. Brown & Associates, retiring after 31 years. The business continues in operation today as J. F. Brown III & Associates, owned by his son Joseph F. Brown III. He was a past president of the Maryland Society of Surveyors and was also named Surveyor of the Year.

Mr. Brown was a member and past president of the Myersville Lions Club. In 2008 he was named a Melvin Jones Fellow by the Lions Club International Foundation, the highest recognition conferred by that group. He was a life member of the Frostburg Elks, and a member of the Frederick VFW and the American Legion. He was a life member of the Myersville Volunteer Fire Company. He was a charter member of Holly Hills Country Club.

Mr. Brown was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church of Frederick.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter Diane Brown Cunningham and her husband Paul, of Washington, D.C.; his son Joseph F. Brown III of Burkittsville, Maryland; his grandchildren Philip Edington Brown, Megan Virginia Brown, Andrew Joseph Brown, John Gabriel Cunningham, and James Michael Cunningham; and his great-grandson Henry Joseph Brown.

He was preceded in death by a brother John Byrnes Brown and a sister Mary Elizabeth Brown Lindsay.

A funeral mass will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, November 4, at St. John the Evangelist Church, 112 E. Second Street, Frederick, Maryland.
