Joseph Baker, Jr.

Mr. Joseph Richard Baker, Jr., 73, of Mt. Airy died on Monday, August 31, 2015 at INOVA Hospital in Fairfax, VA. He was the husband of MaryAnn Gilvey Baker, his wife of 40 years.

Born on July 20, 1942 in Linthicum, he was the son of the late Joseph Richard and Mary Elizabeth Baker.

"Joe" had more than 40 years experience in sales in the information and technologies industry. He played semi-pro basketball in the Eastern League of the CBA and later, along with his son, they were Maryland State Father and Son Tennis Champions. Joe then continued his love of sports becoming a well respected official in basketball, tennis and softball and was past president of IAABO, and a member of USTA and USSSA; he and his daughter Susan, were the first father/daughter basketball referees in Frederick County. Mr. Baker also loved the 50's and 60's era collecting items including a juke box with era music especially that of Elvis and Ricky Nelson; he also had three 57' Chevy's.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three children: Joseph R. Baker, III and wife Julie Ann of Frederick, Jennifer L. Charmel and husband Gary of Las Vegas and Susan E. Etter and husband Mark of Frederick; four grandchildren: Joseph R. Baker, IV, Jennifer S. Baker, Luke M. Etter and Abbie E. Etter; a sister, JuliaAnn E. Baker of Linthicum.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Thursday, September 3, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mt. Airy where funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, September 4, with Rev. Phil Fogarty officiating.

Interment will take place in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Frederick
