José Demetrio Salaverri, 77, of Frederick, Maryland, passed from this life on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at his home in Frederick, Maryland surrounded by his beloved family.
Born on January 14, 1946 in Maya, Spain he was the son of the late Esteban Salaverri and Basilia Garbisu Salaverri. He immigrated to the United States in 1966 and shortly thereafter met his spouse, Patricia Long, and created a full life here with her.
José dedicated his career to the hospitality industry as a master chef and restaurant entrepreneur of Mealey’s Restaurant, in New Market, Maryland for over 20 years. José lived everyday according to his values of service, faith, and kindness. Chances are, if you were sick; he made you food; if you needed a ride, he drove you; if you needed encouragement, he gave you a pep talk. He enjoyed the “simple things in life” as he called them. Long drives through the countryside, quiet walks along the Monocacy river, slow afternoons at home reading the newspaper and watching tennis. He also savored “all things in moderation,” including good French wine and anything with ice cream!
Surviving are his wife, Patricia Long Salaverri; his three children, Stephen Salaverri, Jennifer Salaverri, Elizabeth (Christian) Miranda; and his grandson, Luca Miranda. Additionally, his siblings Lourdes (Luc) Soler, Vicente (Georgia) Salaverri, and Francisca Salaverri. José was the greatest cheerleader and champion for his family, and his spirit of service, faith and kindness will be carried on with them.
A memorial mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, 2023 at Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Frederick. Followed by a Celebration of Life, to honor José in the church hall.
