John "Poke" Nicodemus

John Allen "Poke" Nicodemus , 84, of Boonsboro, Maryland, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 13, 2014 at his home at Fahrney-Keedy Home & Village.

Born on January 3, 1930 in Boonsboro, Maryland he was the son of the late John Petre and Annie Elizabeth (Routzhan) Nicodemus. His wife, Kathleen Serena (Long) Nicodemus preceded him in death on September 24, 2000.

John was a 1947 graduate from Boonsboro High School.

He worked as Supervisor for Washington County Sanitary Commission, retiring in 1990 after 24 years.

John served as a member of the Boonsboro Town Council from 1972 until 1976. He was a member of the Brownsville Church of the Brethren where he taught Sunday School and service on the property committee.

He is survived by four children, Sandra K. Nicodemus of Florida, Karen E. Payne and husband Danny and Ann R. Rickerds and husband Roy all of Knoxville, Maryland, and David C. Nicodemus and wife Barbara of Boonsboro; one sister, Elizabeth A. Hamil and husband William of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, four grandchildren, David C. Nicodemus, Jr. , Douglas C. Nicodemus, Kathleen "Katie" R. Rickerds, and Jarrett T. Rickerds; and one great granddaughter, Charlotte L. Nicodemus; and by numerous nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his special grand-cat, Jimmy.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Edward R. Nicodemus; and son-in-law, Harold Vos Burgh.

A memorial ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at the Brownsville Church of the Brethren, 1911 Rohrersville Road in Knoxville. Rev. Alan M. Smith and Rev. Twyla Rowe will officiate. John will be laid to rest with his wife in a private ceremony to be held at the convenience of the family.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, February 17, 2014 at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro.
