John "Jack" S. Palmer, 92, of Martinsburg, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, October 10, 2014, at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland.
Born on August 2, 1922, in Washington D.C., he was the son of the late Honorable Robert H. and Sophronia (Sanford) Palmer.
Jack graduated from Armstrong High School in Washington D.C. Upon graduation, he attended Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War Two in both the European and Pacific Theatres. Later, in recognition of his service, he received the French Legion of Honor.
Jack attended the First Presbyterian Church in Martinsburg, West Virginia.
Jack worked for the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, first as a biochemist and then as an Administrator in Grants Management, retiring in 1980. After retirement, he still continued to do consulting work for NIH.
In 1971, Jack and his wife bought Stoneridge Farm in the beautiful area of Keedysville, Maryland, where they enjoyed farming the land and hosting many get together's.
He was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the American Society of the French Legion of Honor, and the US Motorhome Club.
Jack is survived by his wife, Roberta (Claytor) Palmer, whom he married on November 20, 1943; and his two sons, Robert B. Palmer and his wife, Joyce, of Washington D.C. and John S. Palmer, Jr. of Lancing, Michigan. He is also survived by two grandsons, Kevin B. Palmer of Washington D.C. and Brian S. Palmer of Silver Spring, Maryland.
A funeral ceremony will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2014, at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, Maryland 21713. Rev. Dr. Rufus T. Burton will officiate. Following the service, family will receive friends for a time of fellowship and gathering at the funeral home. Final resting-place ceremonies will be held privately at Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery in Flintstone, Maryland at a later date.
Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
