John "Jack" Cogan

June 3, 1936 — October 28, 2020

On October 28, 2020, God extended his almighty hand of love and touched the brow of our dear loved one, John (Jack) Patrick Cogan, the loving husband of Kathleen Kelly Cogan.

He was born on June 3, 1936 in Suffern, New York to the late John E. Cogan and Mary Hade Cogan

Jack dedicated 56 years in Biomedical Research and Veterinary Services. He was an accomplished expert in all areas of laboratory animal management and administration ranging from facility design through operations, quality assurance compliance and vaccine testing.  Jack also provided training and assistance to other government agencies, pharmaceutical companies, and health agencies from several foreign governments; all contributing to timely release of vaccines for successful and international immunization programs.

He also served a total of 50+ years in the Army National Guard (New Jersey Army National Guard and Maryland Army National Guard) retiring as Chief Warrant Officer Two (Crypto-Facility Technician).

Jack's many accomplishments include, FDA Commendable Service Awards for “Technical expertise in neurovirulence testing programs which has provided for the timely release of vaccines contributing to successful national immunization programs", NCAB/AALAS Pierson Award, Maryland Meritorious Service Award, various Army Commendation and Achievement awards, Award for Excellence and Outstanding Contributions to Laboratory Animal Managers Assoc., Award for Excellence in Laboratory Animal Management.

He also co-authored several published scientific papers in peer-reviewed publications and made several presentations at professional conferences.

Jack was a member of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS), National Area Branch/NCAB/AALAS, National Capital Area Regional Chapter of Society of Quality Assurance, Scientists Center for Animal Welfare, Laboratory Animal Management Managers Association (LAMA), Potomac Valley Branch (LAMA),  National Guard Assoc. of the United States, National Guard Assoc. of Maryland, Warrant Officers Assoc., Amvets, 4-H leader.

He was also a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and had been an usher for many years.

In his spare time he enjoyed reading, traveling, gardening, woodworking and spending time with his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Kathleen, he is survived by his children, Kelly Cogan Kendlehart (Philip), Deborah Cogan Manfredi, Kevin Cogan (Nancy), Sean Cogan (Polly), Maureen Cogan Walter (Ronald), Christopher Cogan; grandchildren, Brittany Kendlehart Bardsley (Kevin), Megan Kendlehart Cook (Ryan), Sara Manfredi, Michael Manfredi, Jonathan Cogan, Josh Cogan, Amanda Cogan, Matthew Cogan, Mary Kate Cogan, Krista Walter, Lane Cogan; great grandchild, Cal Cook and sister, Patricia Cogan Swenson.

He is preceded in death by his brother, Donald F. Cogan.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, November 2, 2020 at Stauffer Funeral Homes, 104 East Main Street in Thurmont, MD 21788.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 103 Church Street in Thurmont, MD. 21788.  Rev. J. Collin Poston will officiate.  Interment will follow at St. Anthony's Cemetery in Emmitsburg, MD.
