John Charles Vaughan, of Frederick, Maryland, passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 8, 2024, at Frederick Health Hospital.
He was born in Detroit, Michigan on May 7, 1927, to Thomas Vaughan and Violet Eichen. Upon the early death of his father, he and his mother moved to Washington, DC. He attended the Calvert School at St. Matthew’s Cathedral and St. John’s College High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged upon the end of WWII. He graduated Catholic University in 1950 with a BS in Aeronautical Engineering before graduating MIT in 1959 with a MS, also in Aeronautical Engineering. He married Marie Gloria Danzi in 1957 and they settled in Rockville, Maryland. He worked for NavAir for most of his career. He enjoyed piloting gliders and small planes out of the Frederick Municipal Airport. He also sailed catamarans and competed in regattas on the Potomac River with his children.
He was an active member of Holy Cross Church in Garrett Park and then retired to the Frederick area in 1997. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria, who passed in 2017 after their nearly 60 years of marriage. He missed her dearly in his final years. He is survived by his children, Mimi (Al) Arsenault, Elizabeth (Vincent) Meyer, Tom (Becky) Vaughan and Rob (Cary) Vaughan; as well as 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Viewing to be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13th at Stauffer Funeral Home in Frederick. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 14, 2024 at Holy Cross Church in Garrett Park.
