Mr. John M. Tome, 94, of Frederick died September 4, 2016. He was the husband of Esther Martin Tome, his wife of 54 years, whom died in 2007.
He was born in Aurora, IL in 1922, one of two children of John Supplee and Marguerite Moore Tome. He received two baccalaureates, one from Gettysburg College and a second from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also served in the U.S. Navy during WW II and then went on to complete his PhD in chemistry at Pennsylvania State University. Upon completion of his degree, he became an employee of General Electric, starting his career in Research and Development working on polycarbonates and retiring as head of Membrane Products. After retirement he remained in his long-term residence of Scotia, NY until his relocation to Frederick, MD in 2002.
He is survived by: his brother, Mark S. Tome (wife: Jennie); two daughters, Margaret Tome (husband: David Buth) of Tucson, AZ and Alice Tome (husband: Ronald Wange) of Bethesda, MD; one grandson, Peter Tome Wange of Bethesda, MD; and various nieces and nephews. His zest for life and optimistic outlook touched all who knew him; he will be missed.
A private burial is planned at St. John’s Lutheran Church Cemetery in Maytown, PA. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to: The Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Ave., Montgomery, AL 36104.
