John E. Thompson, 75, of Keedysville, Maryland, passed from this life on Monday, November 10, 2014, at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, Maryland.
Born on May 7, 1939, in Brunswick, Maryland, he was the son of the late Reed Temple Thompson, II and Bula Mae (Kidweller) Thompson.
John was the owner of Jet Plumbing and Heating and Thompson's Construction. Later in life, he and his wife operated Thompson's Assisted Living, where they cared for more than twenty elderly people.
John was a plumber, a builder, and a farmer, and throughout his life he and his wife raised over 30 foster children.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Della Irene (Bowers) Thompson, whom he married on July 20, 1958; five children, Earl Thompson of Keedysville, Maryland, Gary Thompson and wife Melinda of Hagerstown, Laura Drake and husband Paul of Keedysville, Holly Smith and husband Randy of Falling Waters, West Virginia, and Johnny Thompson of Thurmont, Maryland; and one sister, Emogene Wyand of Frederick, Maryland. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Earl John, Cheryl, Scott, Kyle, Greg, Amanda, Della Ann, and Brandi; and two great-grandchildren, Dallas and Faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Reed "Dan" Temple, III, and Will Thompson; and seven sisters, Mary Cooper, Dorothy Wall, Garnetta Everhart, Daisy Jones, Nellie Crimm, Gertrude Reed, and Viola Racey.
A funeral ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, November 14, 2014 at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro. Rev. Reuben Egolf will officiate. Final resting place ceremonies will be held privately at Boonsboro Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, November 13, 2014 at the funeral home.
