John Shifler

John Walter Shifler , 81 Dec 22, 1935 - May 18, 2017 John Walter Shifler, 81, of Boonsboro, passed away on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at his home. Born December 22, 1935 to the late John Clay Shifler and Sarah Jane (Lushbaugh) Shifler, he attended St. Mary School, Hagerstown High School, Southern Illinois Center of Crime and Punishment and The University of Maryland School of Fire Fighting. John began working at Acme Markets in Hagerstown at the age of 16. He later became the Store Manager and stayed with Acme Markets until they closed their Hagerstown stores. He went on to work for the Maryland Divisions of Correction as a Correctional Officer. He retired as a Lieutenant after 30 years of service. John had been an active member of the Pioneer Hook and Ladder Dept, Ladder 1, Hagerstown, where he served as chief and later president. He was a member of the Eagles Club Inc. in Waynesboro, AARP, MCEA, and Sons of the American Legion, Post 10, Boonsboro. An avid New York Yankees Fan, he and his sons would travel to New York to attend games at Yankee Stadium and to the Baseball Hall of Fame, Cooperstown. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, Country Music Concerts and picnicking.
He is survived by wife of 58 years, Karen (Toms )Shifler; sons, J. Michael, Darin L. and Jeffrey S.Shifler; daughter, Krista J. Shifler; brother, James D. Shifler; grandchildren, Michael A., Tyler L., Casey L., Justyn M., and Zachary C. Shifler, Jordyn L. Himes, Meghan A. Cordell, and Cassidy B. Garner; great grandchildren, Adalynne, Isaiah, Isla, and Noah. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, May 22, 2017 at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro. A funeral service will take place at 11:00 am on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home. Fr. George Limmer will officiate. Interment will be at Boonsboro Cemetery.
