John Schueler

September 8, 1930 — June 6, 2012

John P. Schueler, Jr., of Boca Raton, FL, and Frederick, MD, passed away Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was 81 years old, the son of Mabel Humphrey Schueler and John P. Schueler, Sr., a music educator in upstate New York, leader of the Utica Civic Band, and solo trombonist with the John Philip Sousa Band.  Mr. Schueler was born in Utica, NY, on September 8, 1930, and was raised in that city and Syracuse, NY.  He attended the University of Cincinnati, Class of 1955, and served as an artillery officer in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958.  After leaving service, he joined the accounting firm Arthur Young & Co. (now Ernst & Young) in New York City and then General Foods Corporation as an internal auditor and controller in White Plains, NY, and Kankakee, IL. In 1969, he began a long tenure with International Multifoods Corp. in Minneapolis, MN, as director of internal auditing, assistant corporate controller, and controller of various corporate divisions.  From 1990 until his retirement In 2002, Mr. Schueler moved to the non-profit sector with the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church in New York City, first as controller of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) and then as treasurer of the World Division.  Mr. Schueler is survived by his wife of 50 years, the former Mary Louise Huston, whom he married on October 28, 1961; three sons  Jeffrey John Schueler and his wife, Linda Holloway Schueler, of Roanoke, Virginia; Steven Vincent Schueler of Owing Mills, Maryland; and Richard Paul Schueler and his wife, Michele Sullivan Schueler, of Branchburg, New Jersey; four grandchildren Philip Jeffrey, Paul Vincent, Ella Grace, and Henry Oliver Schueler; and three cousins  Helen Pearch, Doris Herinings, and Nancy Craig.  His family and friends will remember Mr. Schueler’s seemingly boundless optimism and perseverance. His interests  spanned hiking, skiing, history — Civil War and World War II — and especially travel, and he took immense pride that he was an Army veteran. Whether pulling a camper for his young family behind a station wagon over northern Minnesota, leading his sons’ Boy Scout troop on high adventure trips into the backcountry of the Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming and the Canadian Rockies, traveling across Central America, Europe, Africa, Australia, the Philippines, Japan, India, and Russia on behalf of the Methodist Church— or in his mid-70s undertaking a three month overland camping trek to Alaska — he found meaning in every adventure and always with a sense of stewardship to those around him. And in golf he found a metaphor for the exercise, friendship, sportsmanship, humor, and good cheer he cherished. His Sons will forever be thankful for the lives he helped them build, showing them how to grow into stewards of their own.  The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick on Monday, June 11, from 6-9 pm. Services will be held at the Calvary United Methodist Church, 131 W Second Street, Frederick at 11:00 am, Tuesday, June 12, 2012 with Rev. Kenneth Dunnington and Rev. Harry Cole officiating.  Interment will be on Wednesday at the Homewood Cemetery in Pittsburgh, PA.   In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to any of the following:  • Boy Scout Troop 283, Wayzata Community Church, Wayzata, MD • Calvary United Methodist Church, Frederick, MD • General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church, New York, NY • Skip Viragh Center for Pancreatic Cancer Clinical Research and Patient Care, Johns Hopkins Medical Center, Baltimore, MD •     Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Center, Department of Neurology, Johns Hopkins Medical Center, Baltimore, MD
