John Poston

Mr. John Calton Poston, 71, of Thurmont MD passed away on Saturday, May 11 at his home. John was born November 24, 1941 in Kanawha County WV and was the son of Noah C. and Mary Rachel Griffith Poston.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Alexander Poston.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, the former Brenda Dixon of Hurricane WV, a son Rev. John Collin Poston of Hagerstown MD, a daughter Amy Poston Cricchi and his friend and son-in-law Steve Cricchi of Leonardtown MD.

Also surviving are cousins, David Griffith of Malabar, Florida; June Lyle of Collinsville, Texas, Mary Jane Haley of Kittrell NC and Poston Drake, Charleston WV.

John attended schools in Saint Albans, WV and attended WV State University.  He served four years in the US Navy on the submarine USS Cutlass SS 478 out of Norfolk VA.

After being discharged from the Navy in 1965 he was employed by IBM and relocated to Frederick, Maryland.  He and Brenda moved to Lewistown in 1967 and lived there until May 2012 when they moved to Thurmont.  After being employed for 32 years with IBM as a Customer Engineer and Systems Engineer he retired in 1997. After retirement John enjoyed several part time positions: as Treasurer of Calvary United Methodist Church in Mt. Airy; as a Sales Associate at Backyard Living in Frederick; and most recently as a courier for Frederick County Bank.

John’s generosity, compassion and exuberance for life were second to none. He was actively involved in the community and gave willingly of his time and talent.  He was an active member and lay speaker of the Lewistown United Methodist Church, where for many years he taught Sunday School to the elementary school aged children, sang in the choir and served in many administrative capacities; he also served as Treasurer and on the Board of Directors of the Lewistown Ruritan Club; was an Alternate member of the Frederick County Board of Election Supervisors and was an Election Judge for the Board of Elections; did volunteer work for the Thurmont Food Bank. He served as President of the Lewistown District Volunteer Fire Department for 5 years; and was a Past President of the Thurmont Jaycees.

His hobbies included golfing, gardening, fishing, traveling, and reading.  Although residing in Maryland for 47 years he hoped to be remembered as a West Virginian at heart.

A visitation will be held at Stauffer Funeral Home on 1621 Opossumtown Pike in Frederick MD on Wednesday, May 15 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.  A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at the Lewistown United Methodist Church, 11032 Hessong Bridge Road in Lewistown on Friday, May 17 at 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the Lewistown United Methodist Church, Attention: Building Fund, 11032 Hessong Bridge Road, Thurmont MD 21788.
