On Saturday June 7, 2014, John Davis “Pappy” Poole went home to the Lord.
Pappy was born on July 20, 1925 in Tampa Bay, Florida. He lived in Montgomery County for many years and settled in Frederick County in 2000.
Pappy is the son of the late Ora Mae (Davis) Poole and Grover Poole. He was predeceased by his eldest son, John (Jay) H. Poole.
Pappy is survived by his wife Barbara Jean Poole and four children and eight grandchildren; Greg and wife Brenda Poole of Derwood (Sara and Dayle), Jeff Poole (Jessica, Jonathan and Samantha) and Daughter –in-law Susie Poole of Alexandria, Terri and husband Tim May (Aaron) of Frederick, and Angel and husband Jay Nusbaum (Brady and Collin) of Jefferson.
Pappy graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in 1943 and that fall was inducted into the Army. During World War II he trained as a pilot in the army air corp. He went on to become a gunner. While on a mission the B-24 he was in crashed. He was the sole survivor.
In 1946 he entered into the University of Maryland. He was a member of Sigma Chi. Pappy was also on the 1947 Terrapin Football team that played in the Gator bowl under coach Jim Tatum and was honored along with fellow teammates at Byrd Stadium on the 50th Anniversary of the game.
Over the years Pappy was involved in many organizations: he was a member of the board for First National Bank of Maryland, Past President of the M Club, Past President of the American Red Cross of Montgomery County and member of The Rotary Club of Olney.
Pappy began his career as an entrepreneur during his college days selling sandwiches from a cart in the girl’s dorms. He would eventually open the Congressional Lumber Company and the WoodShed lumber yard. He was part of numerous construction projects in Maryland and Virginia. After losing the lumber business in a fire in 1975 he decided to go into a completely different business; he opened the Cracked Claw Seafood Restaurant in Germantown, Md in 1976. In 1988 he purchased the Old Peter Pan Inn and renamed it The Cracked Claw at Peter Pan; opening the doors in early 1989. In order to fill up such a large building Pappy spent a lot of time and effort successfully applying for Maryland’s first Off Track Betting License. The Cracked Claw at Peter Pan Sports Palace opened in 1993; one day before the Kentucky Derby. It was with immense sadness that Pappy and the family closed the doors for good on Oct. 9, 2011. Although the restaurant is no longer; the many friendships, marriages and families that came from working at the Cracked Claw during those 36 years live on; keeping Pappy alive in our hearts forever.
The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick on Wednesday, June 11th from 6:00-8:00pm. Funeral services will be at the funeral home on Thursday, June 12th at 1:00PM with his son-in-law the Rev. Tim May officiating.
Entombment will be at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in the mausoleum.
