John Stephen Newmann born February 25, 1940, passed peacefully, surrounded by family on August 8, 2024, at Frederick Health Hospital. Stephen is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years, Charlotte Carol, daughter Kym Newmann, son-in-law Jason VanSickle, son John Randall, grandchildren Cash and Madi VanSickle, brother and sister-in-law, Ross & Kris Newmann, brother-in-law Frank, and special cousins Leslie Ballard and Jon Ballard. Stephen was proceeded in death by his parents Ross Ira and Elizabeth (Ballard) Newmann and one sister Doris Oliva.
Stephen graduated from Wheaton High School and received his associate’s degree from Montgomery College, and bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Western State College of Colorado. Stephen taught College English for 50 years before he retired in 2013 from Montgomery College, where he held the title of Professor Emeritus. He was an adjunct at Garrett College for 2 years after retirement. He taught Academic Writing, Journalism, and Grammar and occasionally a course in Literature, at colleges throughout the country. He resided in Thurmont, MD with his wife and son at the foot of Catoctin Mountain. He lived most of his life in the mountains of Colorado, Montana, Idaho, and Maryland. When Stephen was not reading or writing, he liked spending time making music and working with leather for their business, Chapel Crafts. Stephen and Carol participated in the Thurmont Colorfest for 49 years. He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle, spending time with his grandchildren in McHenry, MD, watching Orioles baseball with his wife, and playing computer games, especially Wordle with his daughter Kym.

A celebration of Stephen's life will be held at a later date.
