John James Maly passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at the age of 80 at his home in Frederick surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Shirley K. Maly, his wife of 56 years.
He was born on September 3, 1937 in Detroit, Michigan to the late John A. and Marie Maly.
John lived his childhood in the Detroit, Michigan area. He graduated from Mt. Clemens High School in Mt. Clemens, Michigan in 1956. He then served in the US Navy on the USS Stribling and USS Tidewater. After his discharge he moved to Alexandria, VA and finally moving to Frederick, Maryland to raise his family. He was a senior power plant operator for PEPCO at the Dickerson station where he worked for 32 years.
He was a life member of the Independent Hose Company. He spent many mornings drinking coffee and swapping stories with the Independent Hose Company coffee club. He was also a member of Myersville Volunteer Fire Company, Vigilant Hose Company, Amvets Post #2, USS Stribling DD 867 group, USS Tidewater AD31 Association, 29th Division Association and Tin Can Sailors. He served on the Board of the Frederick County Fire Rescue Museum. He managed and coached for Oden Brothers at East Frederick Little League.
He is survived by son, Scott and wife, Barb Maly, of Emmitsburg; daughter, Linda and husband, Michael Frushour, of Myersville; and son, Brian and wife, Lori Maly, of Middletown; grandchildren, Katelyn and husband, Steven Smith, Nicole Frushour, Kolby (Jenna Dean), Shelby, Tanner, Drew and Alexa Maly and is expecting his great grandson in September. He will also be remembered by his family in Michigan and Virginia.
He is preceded in death by his siblings, Elmira Morisett, Larry Maly and Marie Maly.
A viewing will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 8, 2018 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike in Frederick.
Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 9, 2018 at Stauffer Funeral Home in Frederick. Rev. Tim May will officiate. Interment will be held immediately following the service at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Hospice of Frederick County.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to be made in John’s name to the Independent Hose Company, 310 Baughman’s Lane, Frederick or the Frederick County Fire Rescue Museum, 300-b S Seton Avenue, Emmitsburg, MD.
