John Joseph Hughes, 72, of Bethesda, Maryland, passed from this life on Sunday, October 23, 2022, at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, MD.
 
Born on June 8, 1950, in Bethesda, MD, he was the son of the late Francis and Florence (Smith) Hughes.

John attended John Carroll High School in Washington, DC. He was a proud graduate of Maryland University in College park, MD with a degree in English. John enjoyed reading and writing poetry, and produced hundreds of poems in his final years. He loved his family and was a fixture at holiday and birthday parties. A stroke in 2008 disabled him, and he was no longer able to drive. But he stayed active on his computer and communicated regularly with family and friends. John also enjoyed music, playing the guitar before his stroke, and was a fan of the Beatles and Bruce Springsteen. The middle child, John is survived by two sisters, Mary Ann Wood (Ken) and Catherine Melloy, and two brothers, Thomas (Karen) and Timothy (Laura).

The family will receive friends from 10-11 am on Wednesday, November 2, 2022, at Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A. (Fred), 1621 Opossumtown Pike in Frederick, MD, where a celebration of John's life journey will take place at 11 am.  Deacon John Manley will officiate.  Interment will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, MD.
