John Henry Smith, age 83, passed away on July 13, 2024, in his hometown of Hagerstown, Maryland.
Born in Hagerstown, John attended Boonsboro High School before embarking on a remarkable 58-year career with George D. Reynolds and Advertising, Incorporated. He was revered as the Construction Foreman for the outdoor advertising division and was known, affectionately, as ‘Mr. Fix It’ and ‘Jack of All Trades’.
John's life was filled with the joy of family and hobbies. He was a devoted husband to Judy Smith, with whom he shared 59 years of marriage, filled with adventures and cherished moments. A true baseball fan and supporter of the Baltimore Orioles, John also took great pride in supporting his son and daughter-in-law's coaching endeavors. His love for working with his hands was evident in everything he built or repaired and providing a fix to any challenge. In his later years, he cherished the simple pleasures of porch sitting, where he enjoyed the company of family and friends or back road journeys through the countryside.
John is survived by his loving wife, Judy Smith; son and daughter (in-law), Brian and Wendi Smith; sister, Patsy Schudel; nephews, Jeff Authers and Steve Stone; and nieces, Barb Neely and Shelby Davis.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Cleveland Smith and Alice Frances Weaver Smith; and siblings, Jake Smith, Virginia Umphenour, Jane Stone, and Faybelle Smith.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 18, 2024, at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home in Boonsboro.
Funeral services are scheduled for the following day, Friday, July 19, 2024, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Beaver Creek Cemetery. John was not a fancy person, and the family would encourage casual dress to meet his wishes.
John’s life will be remembered as one of dedication, love, and service, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him.
