Mr. John Gilbert Hamlin, 89, of Frederick , died peacefully in his sleep on June 16, 2011 at Collingswood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Rockville where he was in the process of recovering from surgery. He was the husband of Bettye “Bass” Hamlin. They married, December 25, 1952 after dating for nine weeks in her hometown of Freeport , Texas .
Born on October 5, 1921 in Gorham , New Hampshire , he was the son of the late Roy Gilbert and Wava Richardson Hamlin. Mr. Hamlin served in the U.S. Army during World War II, graduated from the University of Maine with a Civil Engineering degree and retired from the U.S. Government while working at the National Institutes of Health.
Also surviving in addition to his wife are children; Wava Hamlin of Germantown, Donald C. Hamlin II and wife Cheryl of Frederick, Grandchildren; Jennifer White and husband Adam of Germantown, Scott Hamlin of Baltimore, Brian Hamlin of Germantown and Christie Hamlin of Germantown, Sisters; Carolyn Story of British Columbia, Canada and Mary March of Bridgton, Maine. Mr. Hamlin is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Gutowski and one brother Richard Hamlin.
Private family services were held on Friday, June 17, 2011 and internment will be held in October in his hometown.
The family asks that contributions in his name be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3701 Pender Dr. # 400 Fairfax , VA 22030-6045 .
