John William Fink, 87, of Thurmont, Maryland, passed away on June 29, 2018 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of 62 years to Joan Elizabeth Fink.
Born on September 10, 1930, in Thurmont, he was the son of the late Clarence and Margaret (Sides) Fink. John graduated from Thurmont High School as class Vice President in 1950. After which, he served in the US Navy during the Korean War as a pipefitter third class on the USS White Marsh with the Amphibious Force, Atlantic Fleet. Following his service, John continued his family plumbing business at CJ Fink Plumbing & Heating as a journeyman plumber through retirement.
In his spare time, John enjoyed many hobbies. He was an avid craftsman who was especially skilled in the art of woodworking. He built many pieces including hand-crafted, outdoor Christmas decorations that won him first place in the annual Thurmont Christmas decorating contest many times. In addition to his woodworking, John devoted much of his time to landscaping his house and ensuring it was in tip-top condition. As a clock collector, John adored eccentric cuckoo clocks and antique grandfather clocks. He was also fond of trips to Florida with his son, David. As a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, John served as an usher for many years. He could often be found spending time with acquaintances at local establishments and riding his scooter around town. John also belonged to the American Legion Post 168 of Thurmont.
In addition to his wife, John is survived by his son David Fink, David’s wife Joanne Fink, both of Thurmont, MD, and her son, Ryan Little married to Kelly Little, of Biglerville, PA; his daughter Susan Decker, her husband James Decker, and their daughter, Kelsey Decker, all of New Market, MD; and his daughter Linda Spoor, her husband Ronald Spoor II, and their children—Brandon Spoor and Brittany Spoor—all of Thurmont, MD. He is also survived by his brother Bernard Fink of Thurmont, MD and his sister Helen (Fink) Perkins of Springfield, VA as well as fourteen nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Margaret Fink, his sister Dorothy (Fink) Kelly, and his brother Robert Fink.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 pm on Thursday, July 5, 2018 at Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A., 104 E. Main Street, Thurmont, MD 21788. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am on Friday, July 6th, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 103 N. Church Street, Thurmont, MD 21788. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Cemetery, Thurmont.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of John may be made to Hospice of Frederick, 516 Trail Avenue, Frederick, MD 21701 or Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 103 N. Church Street, Thurmont, MD 21788.
