Joel Peter Garies, 69, of New Market, Maryland passed away March 11, 2015 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Diane Garies. Born June 12, 1945 in Romulus, New York, he was the son of the late John D. and Jane Garies. Orphaned at age eleven, he was raised by his grandparents the late Mr. and Mrs. Otto Rasmussen in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Mr. Garies retired from Pepco in 2009 after 40 years of service. He was a graduate of University of Florida. He was a member of Mount Carmel United Methodist Church. In addition to being an active member of Montgomery Playhouse he was the former president of Rockville Little Theater. He had been actively involved in the homeowner’s association of the Signature Club at Greenview in New Market. Joel enjoyed traveling with his wife, carpentry, and golf. Above all, Joel enjoyed spending time with his family.
He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Lisa Garies of Charles Town, West Virginia; son, John Garies of Rockville; step-daughter and her husband, Stephani and Brett Eaton; step-son and his wife, Paul and Nicole Martinell; grandchildren, Alyssa and Patrick Eaton, Joshua Garies, Haley Colangelo, and Avery Martinell. He was predeceased by his brothers Bryan and Mark Garies.
A celebration of Joel’s life will be held on Saturday, March 21st at 11:00AM at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick with Pastor Jennifer Smith officiating. The family will be present to receive friends one hour prior to service time.
Memorial donations in Joel’s memory can be made to the American Cancer Society.
