Jo Ann Effland, daughter of Celia Burnside Smith Leatham and Russell Malloy Smith Sr., passed away at the Homewood Retirement Center on August 3, 2014. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Russell (Bud) Malloy Smith Jr., many special friends, and her beloved husband of 52 years, John E. Effland Jr.
She is survived by daughter, Suzanne Kimball, and her husband, Tom, of Jackson Springs, North Carolina; daughter, Vicki Bowers, and her husband, Richard, of Chester, Virginia; son, John E. Effland III, and his wife, Amy, of Charlottesville, Virginia; son, William Effland, and his wife, Anne, of Myersville, Maryland; and son, Charles Effland, and his wife, Catherine, of Frederick, Maryland. She is also survived by grandchildren, Liz Kimball; Sandi and husband, Billy Wood of Mechanicsville, Virginia; Sarah Bowers; Steven Effland; Ryan and Connor Evans; Dan and wife, Lara Effland; Jake and wife, Kelly Effland; Kate Effland; Tom Effland; Taylor Effland; Amanda Effland; and Abigail Effland; and great-grandchildren, Alek and Anna Effland, and Celia and Charlie Wood.
She graduated from Fairmont State College, West Virginia with a degree in retail and began working at Hartley’s Department Store in Fairmont, then later worked as a telephone operator in Baltimore, and finally was a homemaker once her children were born. She was active in her church and community in Baltimore County and was involved there in the organization of the first Nursery School Preschool at St. Luke Methodist Church, Methodist Women's Fellowship, and was PTA president of Woodlawn Elementary School. She was a member of the AT&T Pioneers in Frederick and the Frederick County Homemakers.
Memorial services will be held at Frederick Presbyterian Church, 115 W. Second Street, on Saturday, September 6th at 11 am. Additional services will be held at Homewood at a time and date to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. The family of Jo Ann wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the staff at Homewood Retirement Center for all their tireless care and close friendships they enjoyed with our Mom.
