Joan Harvey Eckhardt

October 28, 1937 — February 18, 2007

On Saturday February 17, 2007, died at home in Walkersville, MD of kidney failure complications due to Multiple Myloma. She was born October 28, 1937, in Nanticoke, PA. She attended Lake-Lehman High School in Pennsylvania; and, Montgomery College, Rockville MD. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Col (Ret) Walter L. Eckhardt, Sr., son, Walter L. Eckhardt, Jr. and wife Rochelle of Frederick, MD, two grandchildren, Michelle and Danella, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother Agnes Lane Harvey, father Arlie R. Harvey, an infant brother, and brother, Gilbert V. Harvey all of Noxen, PA. She moved to Walkersville in 2002 from the Fox Hills West community of Potomac, MD where she had lived for 30 years. She was very active in the FHW homeowners association. She served as HOA Treasurer for several years and managed the home safety program to get smoke detectors installed, service entrance cable rating increased, and branch circuits examined for aluminum wiring. She worked as a Maryland District Court Clerk, with the Maryland Office of Juvenile Services, and as a Real Estate Associate. She returned to Maryland after three years in Weatherby Lake, MO. She previously lived eight years in Wheaton, MD and two years in Harrisburg working as a PA State Tax Examiner. She became very involved in the activities of the US Army Rangers. Her husband, a Korean War Ranger was located in 1985 by the association of Rangers of that era. His ability to serve as Secretary/Treasurer and then President of the association was only possible with her full support and encouragement.

Visitation: Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 21, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick MD from 7:00 - 9:00 PM.

Services: Funeral service will be on Saturday, February 24, at the Swanson Funeral Home, 2386 State Route 118, Hunlock Creek, PA (corner of PA routes 118 and 29) at 11:00 AM with the family receiving friends from 10:00 - 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at the Bethel Hill United Methodist Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the 75th Ranger Regiment family assistance fund, The Ranger Regiment Association, 6420 Dawson Loop, Building 2931, Fort Benning, GA 31905.
