Joan Gussie Whiten Smith

Joan Gussie Whiten Smith entered into eternal rest on Thursday, August 7, 2008 at the Kline Hospice House in Mt. Airy, MD.

Born April 24, 1934 in Sunnyside, MD she was the daughter if the late James L. R. Whiten and Gussie M. Harris Whiten. She was the wife of the late John Frances (Smikey) Smith.

She was a graduate of Lincoln High School, class of 1952 where she served as National President of Future Homemakers of America. She also attended the University of Maryland at Princess Anne where she continued as National President of Future Homemakers of America.

Joan worked for many years at the National Institutes of Health, Price Electric Company and at Fort Detrick.

She was an avid reader, accomplished pianist and loved to solve crossword puzzles.

She leaves to cherish her memory, sisters, Micleta Alfernia Dailey and Helen J. Tyler, brothers, James H. Whiten and Larry L.M. Whiten and wife Phyllis, all of Frederick. She is also survived by several devoted nieces and nephews, cousins and other relatives and close friends.

She will always be remembered for her bright smile and her sense of humor.

Services: A memorial service will be held at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at 11:00 AM where the family will be present to receive friends from 10:00-11:00. Rev. LaDelel Feemster will officiate.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be may to Hospice of Frederick County, PO Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.
