Joan Cobb Sampselle, age 88, passed away Monday morning, August 25, 2014, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the beloved wife for 66 years of Rev. William Sampselle, who passed in 2011. Her parents in rural Oklahoma were Wilmer Cobb and Tura Bee Harmon Cobb, but she was raised after their deaths by her aunt and uncle, Mary Olive and Daniel Rennick, in Takoma Park, MD. She is survived by siblings Lynn Cobb, Gail Cobb, and Lura Lee Strawn.
Joan uplifted her community as a teacher in Carroll County Public Schools for three decades, then by teaching music at Frederick Christian Academy for 15 years. While working as an educator and raising five children, she also served in the Christian community for four decades as organist, Sunday school teacher, secretary, cook, usher, and do-it-all for
the Methodist churches ministered by her husband.
Even throughout her final days in a nursing home, she was found playing Christian songs and hymns for her neighbors. Throughout her life, her deep faith encircled and comforted everyone she knew.
Her compassion and faith constitute the everlasting roots of her family legacy: as mother to children Joy, David [wife Kathy], Alane [husband Kerry Haynes], Bonnie [husband George Meeks], and Melodie; as grandmother to Cara, Sara, John, Dirk, Ben, and Emily; and as great-grandmother to Naomi, Cali, Keith, and Zoe.
Finding words to describe her indomitable character and her lasting influence on others is next to impossible. The hearts of everyone who ever met her will sorely grieve her passing, but time will allow memories of her graciousness and compassion to last forever.
A viewing will be held at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike on Saturday, August 30 from 3:00-5:00pm. A Celebration of Joan's life will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, August 31st at at 4:00pm with Dr. Larry Eubanks
officiating. The family will also be present to receive friends on Sunday from 3:00 until service time.
Flowers may be sent to Stauffer's Funeral Home, 1621 Opposumtown Pike, Frederick, MD 21702. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Joan's name to the Music Department, Frederick Christian Academy, 6642 Carpenter Rd, Frederick, MD.
