Joan Leslie Fosburg, 83, passed peacefully from this earthly life into the presence of our great God on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. Born on November 12, 1941 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Mary and Oliver Frank. Joan attended the Williamsport Hospital School of Nursing where she became a registered nurse. Joan was proud of her profession and spent her life generously sharing her knowledge and caregiving with her patients, family and friends. Joan married her life-long love and husband, Steve Fosburg in 1962. Joan and Steve then moved from Pennsylvania to Gaithersburg, Maryland where they put down roots and raised their family. In 2006, Joan and Steve moved to Newville, PA where Joan would frequently gather her family for holidays, special occasions, and sleepovers with her grandchildren. Joan was an active member of First United Presbyterian Church in Newville, PA until moving to Frederick, Maryland following Steve’s passing in December of 2020.
Joan will be remembered for her unwavering love and devotion to her family who will miss her greatly. Joan took great pride in raising five daughters: Stephanie Fosburg (Laura), Stacie Chalupka (Don), Leslie Meyer (Brad), Erica Mata (Gabe), and Megan Minnick (Kevin). Among Joan’s greatest joys were her 16 grandchildren: Alex, Zak (Petra), Caroline (Andrew), and Maria Chalupka; Ty, Avery, and Regan Plate; Kaelyn, Reese, Braden, Addy, and Isabela Mata: Hailey, Owen, Ryan, and Ashlynn Minnick. She would have adored knowing her two great-grandchildren, Haven Chalupka and John Alden Chalupka, had dementia not prevented her from doing so.
Joan’s grandchildren will affectionately remember “Mimi” as a steady childhood presence offering love, comfort, and encouragement. Her grandchildren will hold dearly to their memories of Mimi’s smile and laughter, playing games including Uno, Solitaire and crossword puzzles, and cuddling with Mimi in her recliner while her favorite crime shows played in the background. They will also remember trips to the grocery store ending with a candy bar treat, countless home cooked meals, Thanksgiving flu shot line-ups, her gentle way of brushing tangled hair, and the sound of her electric carving knife while preparing a family meal. Also remembered by Joan is her sister, Karen Frank (Abby) of Rockville, Maryland with whom she shared a lifelong bond and friendship.
Family and friends will gather to remember Joan on Sunday, February 23, 2025 at Stauffer’s Funeral Home at 1621 Opossumtown Pike in Frederick, Maryland. Joan’s family will receive visitors from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. followed by a Celebration of Joan’s Life at 2:00 p.m.
In honor of Joan’s lifelong love and commitment to children as a mother, grandmother, and nurse, memorial contributions may be made in her name to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
