Joan Flake

March 20, 1934 — December 11, 2019

Joan Burgess Flake passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 11, 2019.  Born on March 20, 1934 in Greenwood, South Carolina to Mary Jarrett and William Burgess, Sr.  She was a devoted nurse for over 40 years, retiring from Frederick Memorial Hospital in 1997.  She was married for 55 years to Robert Flake, who passed away in 2009.  She is survived by her three daughters, Janet Spinnler (Donald) of McClellanville, South Carolina, Rebecca Lewis (Preston Sr.) of Frederick, Maryland and Bonnie Orvig (Randall) of Huger, South Carolina; 5 grandchildren, Bryan Spinnler, Jessica Stansbury (Cameron), Brittany Lewis, Preston Lewis Jr. and Hunter Orvig and 2 great-grandchildren, Kendall and Adrian Stansbury.  She is also survived by her sister, Patsy Harris and brother William Burgess, Jr. and two sister-in laws, Jean Burgess and Nancy C. Burgess and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Marian Stephens and Nancy V. Burgess, brothers Calvin Burgess and Jerry Burgess, sister-in-law Jackie Burgess, brother-in-laws Cecil Stephens and Wayne Harris.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at North Hampton Manor Nursing Home in Frederick, MD for their love and care over the past two years.

The family will receive friends and family at Stauffer's Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike  Frederick, MD 21702 on Monday, December 16 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm.

A Celebration of Life service will follow at the funeral home at 1:00 pm.  Rev. Tim May will officiate.  Interment will be held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association in remembrance of her late husband.
