Joan M. Burns

Joan Marie Burns of Mt. Airy, MD went to be with the Lord on January 1, 2023 at the age of 91.

Born in Pennsylvania in 1931 to Leonard and Margie Lowman Hoade, Joan was married for 71 years to Charles “Nip” Burns of Mt. Airy, where they raised their greatest legacy: five extraordinary daughters who inherited their mother’s knack for finding hilarity in the dullest moments.

Never one to miss an adventure, Joan lived to the fullest. Creating, sewing, shopping, gathering her family to the beach year after year, serving God faithfully - she poured the colors of her soul into the people around her, loving life with the same fervor that made her beloved by her family and unbeatable in Scrabble.

She is survived by her husband and five daughters; Kristi Stansfield (Tom), Marcie Harne (Ray), Wendy Hjembo (David), Lori Baran (Mark), and Jill Brice (Douglas), as well as twenty-one grandchildren and twenty-nine great grandchildren - all of whom were fed an ample diet of love, joy, and grilled cheese sandwiches.  Joan’s vibrant family bears testament to a life well spent.

A family graveside service was held Thursday January 5, 2023.
