J. Michael McNeal Jr., 59

J. Michael “Big Mike” McNeal, 59, of Middletown, Maryland died Thursday, January 24, 2013 at home surrounded by family and friends.

Born,  May 10, 1953, in Arlington County, Virginia, he was the son of Ann C. McNeal and the late Joseph M. McNeal of Frederick, Maryland.

Mike was the Manager of the Frederick Division of Griffith Energy Services, Inc. where he was employed for 38 years.

He was a Life Member of the Middletown Volunteer Fire Company where he served for 24 years.  Mike served as a Board of Director, Driver Training Officer, and regularly assisted with the Company carnival, bingo, banquets, and many other fundraisers.  Mike was also a Life Member of the Braddock Heights Volunteer Fire Company where he served as Fire/Rescue Chief for six years and held various other operational and administrative positions.  Mike also served on various Frederick County Volunteer Fire and Rescue and Maryland State Firemen's Association committees and is a member of the Hall of Fame.  Mike also served for five years as a member of the United Steam Fire Engine Co. No. 3, Inc.

Mike attended St. John’s Regional Catholic School and graduated from Governor Thomas Johnson High School in 1971.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife Karen C. McNeal, one stepdaughter, Sarah K. Stevens and husband Patrick of Middletown; one stepson, David S. Gysberts, of Hagerstown.  He is also survived by two grandsons, Connor and Luke Stevens.  In addition, he is also survived by a sister, Joanne McNeal, and a brother Marc McNeal, his wife Robin D. McNeal and their two children, Kristen and Brandon McNeal, all from Frederick.  Also surviving him is an aunt, Rose Marie Myers of Frederick, and his cousin, Kenneth Willard, of Ft. Myers, Florida.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1620 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD 21702.  The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Middletown Volunteer Fire Company, PO Box 322, Middletown, MD 27169 or Hospice of Frederick County, PO Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.
