Jean R. Poirier, M.D.

June 19, 1929 — December 13, 2008

Jean R. Poirier, M.D., of Frederick, died Saturday, Dec. 13, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Worcester, Mass. on June 19, 1929, the son of the late Raoul Rene Poirier and Therese LaPointe Poirier.

Jean, known by most as "Doc", joined the Merchant Marines at age sixteen, followed by service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Upon his return he attended undergraduate and medical school at the University of North Carolina.

He moved to Frederick and opened his medical practice in 1961. He continued to take care of generations of patients until his retirement in January of 2008.

There is a phrase in Jean's native French language, "Joie De Vivre", which translates as an, "Infinite Joy of Living". This simple phrase describes his life to a tee.

"Doc" Poirier had so many interests and passions throughout his life that they are difficult to list. He loved practicing medicine more than anything else. For 47 years, his patients knew that they could "walk-in" Doc's office whenever they were sick and he would make time to see them, even making house-calls, well into his seventies.

He had a passion for thoroughbred horse racing that spanned over decades. He created a racing stable, Entremont Farms, and bred, trained and raced stakes winners and champions such as Cojak and Amber Pass, along with his partners.

He was also passionate about golf and loved nothing more than playing 18 holes with his many friends at Holly Hills Country Club and retiring to the clubhouse for a good game of cards.

Doc loved music and was a consummate
pianist/singer and entertained family and friends at parties and gatherings over the years with his smooth Sinatra-like style.

Doc loved open farm land, so in his "spare time" he renovated farm houses, remodeled dairy barns into race-horse stables, built stone walls, koi ponds, fenced-in fields, and planted trees. He admitted to having a "fetish" for land, stones and water.

Doc left behind many friends, family and patients, whose lives he enriched, inspired and encouraged who will miss him dearly, but will celebrate his life by carrying on in his tradition.

Jean leaves behind his loving partner, Carole Jean Hursey, his daughter, Cheryl Poirier and son, Stephen Poirier, his step-son Tony Hursey and wife Liliana Hursey, his step-daughter Donna Hursey Goff and husband Robert Goff, his son-in-law Jorge Morales and daughter-in-law, Mary Poirier. He was an adored grandfather of Lex Poirier, Mickey Poirier, Diego Morales and step-grandfather to Josh Hursey and Allie Hursey, all of Frederick. He leaves his loving cousins Pierre Henault and Michelle Henault.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Normand Poirier and is survived by his brothers, Conrad Poirier and Francois Poirier and his nephews, Marc and David Poirier.

Visitation: Family will receive friends at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, on Thursday, December 18th, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. with a time of sharing beginning at 7:00 p.m.
