Jeanette McIntyre Patterson

Jeanette McIntyre Patterson, 86, of Frederick, MD, passed away Friday, December 17, 2023 of complications associated with a recent fall.  Mrs. Patterson lived at the Edenton Retirement Community, in Frederick, since moving there with her husband, Bobby Patterson, in 2019.

Mrs. Patterson was born July 5, 1937 in Rocky Mount, NC to loving parents Nettyle Hogg and Charles Drake McIntyre.  Her younger sister, Charlotte, came along a few years after.  Jeanette spent summers in Georgia with extended family.  One summer she was at a family picnic when she was chased by chickens.  This gave her a common bond with her high school sweetheart and husband, Bobby, who had similar life events in Tennessee.

After graduating from East Carolina College and establishing herself with the Social Security Administration in Lynchburg, VA, Jeanette married Bobby August 13, 1961 in Rocky Mount, NC.  They set up their household in Salem, VA and had their first child, Leigh, soon after.  They moved to Vinton, VA for Bobby to pursue his assignment as William Byrd High School Principal, and had their children Robert, and Carol.

Mrs. Patterson took care of the household, and most of the children’s activities, eventually taking a position in the William Byrd Middle School office, taking attendance and assisting with other duties, allowing her to establish lifelong relationships with many students she followed through high school and into adulthood.  Jeanette had many, many friends and colleagues throughout her life.  She spent many days helping with the Roanoke Valley SPCA and took frequent walks with Bobby.  She helped with the Vinton Baptist Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years, but her focus was always on her family.

Jeanette is survived by her sister, Charlotte Montgomery (Eddie); children, Leigh Friedman (David), Robert Alexander Patterson, Jr. (Audrey), and Carol van Doorn (Marc Musser); grandchildren, Sam Friedman (Andrea), Alexander Friedman, Owen van Doorn, and James van Doorn; nephews, Bill Patterson, Danny Spikes, Patrick Patterson and Chad Montgomery; nieces, Rita Patterson Reghanti, Wanda Spikes Benson, and Shannon Montgomery Thorpe.  Jeanette’s husband, Bobby, passed away in 2020.

Mrs. Patterson will be interred with Bobby at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick.  A memorial service is being planned at Mountain View Cemetery in Vinton, VA for Saturday, June 1, 2024.  

Her children wish to thank the staff of Edenton, especially health aides Tawana, Tina, and Corleda, Joyce R., for their care, and administrator RaeAnn for her guidance.
