Jean Elizabeth Herrity Cavaness

Mrs. Jean Elizabeth Herrity Cavaness, 82, of Mt. Airy passed away Wednesday, October 8, 2008, at Lorien of Mt. Airy, MD.

She was born April 24, 1926 in Washington, DC and was the daughter of Frank J. and Alice Hindman Herrity.

Mrs. Cavaness was a member of Ashton United Methodist Church; active in the Randy Lions of Silver Spring, Maryland, and Gamma Bata Sigma sorority; past President of the Montgomery County Widowed Persons Council. Jean worked for Hewitt Insurance Company for many years.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Allen L. Cavaness.

Surviving are four children, Carol Cavaness Thomas and husband Jim of Prescott Valley, Arizona, Michael Cavaness and wife Robyn of Bozeman, Montana, Eileen Stewart and husband Randy of Mt. Airy, MD and Donald Cavaness and wife Mary of Mt. Airy. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, Christiana Ober, Zachary Cavaness, Dayna Hadden, Matthew Cavaness, Rachel Stewart, Joshua Cavaness, Amy Cavaness, Evan Stewart, Laura Abbott and Evan Thomas; and two great-grandchildren Alladene Hadden and Sonja Jane Cavaness. She also leaves behind two sisters, Evalyn M. Phelps of White Plains, MD, and Shirley A. Shelton of LaPlata, MD, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their thanks to the staff of Lorien Mt. Airy and Carroll Hospice for their kind care of Jean.

Services: A Celebration of Jeans life will be held on Tuesday, October 13, 2008 at Ashton United Methodist Church, Ashton, MD. 17314 New Hampshire Avenue, Ashton, Maryland, at 11:00am.
Interment will be private at Union Cemetery, Spencerville, MD.
