Jean Hutzell

Jean Elizabeth (Martz) Hutzell, 91, passed away on Tuesday, , January 26, 2016 at Meritus Medical Center, Hagerstown, MD. She was a lifelong resident of Boonsboro, MD and most recently a resident at Robinwood Assisted Living, Hagerstown, MD.

Born near Boonsboro on December 26, 1924, she was the daughter of the late John N. and M. Etta (Hines) Martz. She was married for 59 years to Clifford L. Hutzell who passed away in November 2005.

Jean was a 1942 graduate of Boonsboro High School and graduated from the Washington County Hospital School of Nursing in 1945. She worked at the hospital then, after her children were born, did private duty nursing both in the hospital and in patient's homes for many years. She retired from Reeder's Memorial Home December 31, 1991 after 16 years as night supervisor.

Jean was a lifetime member of the Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church in Boonsboro. She was a former secretary of the Boonsboro Senior Citizens Club and a former member and treasurer of the Boonsboro Fire Companies Ladies Auxiliary, and a member of the Washington County School of Nursing Alumni Association.

She enjoyed watching the sunsets from her front window, gardening, watching the birds and the butterflies in her yard. Jean liked to cook for family gatherings. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, telling them stories of how things were when she was growing up and about relatives that they never knew. She spent most of her life caring for other people.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Lois Foxwell and husband Gary of Salisbury, MD; sister, Geraldine Fales of Boonsboro; grandchildren, Christopher Foxwell and wife, Desiree, of Seaford, DE, Michael Foxwell of Salisbury, MD, Dennis Hutzell and Scott Hutzell of Hagerstown, MD; daughter-in-law, Susan (Yingling Hutzell) Prorock of Smithsburg, MD. She is also survived by three nieces, two nephews and many other loving family members and friends.

In addition to her husband and parents Jean was preceded in death by a son, Dennis L. Hutzell; brother, Linwood Martz and her infant brother, John Martz Jr.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 3, 2016, at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro.

A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m on Thursday, February 4, 2016 at the Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church, 134 South Main Street, Boonsboro. There will be a viewing one hour prior to the service at the church. The Rev. Dr.  Ray Roberson will be officiating. Final resting place ceremonies will follow at the Boonsboro Cemetery.
