Mrs. Jean Louise Griffin Hammond, 90, of Frederick died Friday, August 29, 2014 at Homewood at Crumland Farms. She was the loving wife of the late J. Regis Hammond who predeceased her on June 21, 2014.
Born January 20, 1924 in Beacon, NY, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Mae Weisner Griffin.
Mrs. Hammond was a retired educator who taught in New York prior to moving to the Frederick area 32 years ago. During the 1980s, she continued her teaching career as a part-time English instructor at Frederick Community College. She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma in Frederick. Together with her husband, they were dedicated volunteers with the Literacy Council of Frederick County providing tutoring for reading enhancement. Mrs. Hammond was also a long-time volunteer with Frederick Memorial Hospital in the radiology and ICU departments.
Mrs. Hammond was a member of St. Katherine Drexel Roman Catholic Church.
She is survived by her son, Peter R. Hammond and wife, Rita Manalo, of Potomac; daughter, Margaret H. Smith of Mechanicsburg, PA; four grandchildren, Gabriel Hammond, Daniel Hammond, Ellen Hangen (Andrew), and Christina Stada (Scott); three step-grandchildren, Marie Doria, Mae Pagcu, and Patricia Pagcu; three great-grandchildren, Paige Hangen, Andrew Hangen Jr., and Jackson Stada; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Elda Arce; and two sisters, Dorothy Barrett and Elizabeth Bailey.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A., 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick.
A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 4 from St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 118 E. Second Street, Frederick with Father Keith Boisvert officiating.
Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
