Jay Norman “Doc” Geiser, 59, died Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.
He was the husband of Linda Jean Geiser, his wife of 33 years. Born in Frederick on October 13, 1954, he was the son of Nancy Geiser-Gaver and the late Norman Spencer Geiser. Besides his wife and mother, Jay is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jayson and Amanda Geiser, his brother Larry Geiser and wife Karen, his sister-in-law Donna Allison, his Aunt and Uncle, Jane and Charles Smith, and his Aunt and Uncle, Janet and Thomas Geiser. Jay will be remembered by his cousins, nieces, nephews, business associates, neighbors, and by a very close circle of friends. A special thank you to Jay’s very close friends, Debbie and Charles Velnoskey, for all the good times that were shared. Jay was preceded in death by his brother, Dean Taylor Geiser.
Jay was a graduate of Governor Thomas Johnson High School. He was a long-time entrepreneur in Frederick, and was the owner of Doc Geiser’s Restaurant and Carry-out. He was the first chairman of “Frederick’s Fourth”, the annual 4th of July celebration in Baker Park that originated in 1984. Jay chaired this event for five years. He also participated in organizing Frederick’s In The Streets, and many other Frederick celebrations.
Jay was a Master of the Culinary Arts after earning his degree from The Culinary Institute of America, which seems a little ironic since he was best known for fried chicken, cole slaw, Doc Star hot dogs, and Doc White hamburgers. An accomplished chef, Jay loved to cook, a passion he followed through many positions in Frederick which led to his purchase of Watson’s Carry Out, now Doc Geiser’s. Jay’s career also included several computer sales positions culminating with a role as Regional Sales Manager for Samsung Electronics.
Not only could Jay cook his way into your heart, he also had the uncanny ability to make everyone he met smile brighter than the sun itself; his wit was immeasurable. Jay also had a gift for public speaking which he expanded through his membership in Toastmasters winning many awards at the state level. Jay was also a talented musician. He played with local groups “Bush Creek County” and “Unity”, but his claim to fame was the role he played performing in “The Hit Men”, playing keyboards, vocalizing, and making his audiences laugh. You could often find Jay playing his piano at home entertaining his family, friends, and his Jack Russell Terrier, Spunky. Jay was also an avid fan of the Baltimore Ravens, the Washington Capitals, and the Maryland Terrapins.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Oppossumtown Pike, Frederick. Visitation will also be held on Friday, May 16th, 2014 from 4:00-5:00 PM with a Memorial Service beginning at 5:00 PM to celebrate Jay’s life.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a cancer research charity of your choice.
