Jay Fifer

Jay S. Fifer, 79, entered peacefully into eternal life on October 8, 2018. Born July 18, 1939 he was the son of the late Dr. Jesse S. Fifer and Mary F. Fifer. Jay was predeceased by his loving and devoted wife of 51 years, Virginia P. Fifer.

Jay was a life-long resident of Maryland, growing up in Ridgely and Buckeystown, and making his home in Frederick after returning from his service with the Air Force in Montana. He graduated high school from Randolph Macon Academy, Front Royal, VA. After military discharge, he worked for Better Homes Equipment Company as general office manager, then entering into the financial services industry, he was a successful agent with Equitable Life Assurance Society including holding managerial and regional roles. After retiring from Equitable, he was an independent agent, financial broker, and estate planner for many years until his full retirement. Throughout his career he pursued numerous courses, certifications and licenses in financial services.

Jay was a life-long member of the Church of the Brethren, serving in leadership roles including as interim pastor at two churches. With a life-long commitment to his community, Jay helped others individually and enriched his community through many endeavors, such as helping to create the Family Festival held in Baker Park, volunteering with Meals on Wheels, being a member of the Rotary Club and serving as president, creating endowment programs with organizations such as the Community Foundation and The Arc of Frederick County. He served as Trustee, Chairman and other leadership roles with National Capital Area Boy Scouts, Development Council of Frederick Memorial Hospital, and others.

Jay enjoyed reading and learning, traveling, home projects (such as landscaping and wood working), fishing, hunting, hiking, biking, skiing (water and snow), listening to music, eating Maryland crabs, and hosting old-fashioned apple butter boils. Spending time with family and friends was something he cherished.

Jay was a devoted family man and will be greatly missed by his daughters, Kathryn Tucker (Michael) and Jayme Cline (Raymond), grandsons Phillip Tucker (Jaimie) and Matthew Cline, and great-grandchildren Phillip, Jr., Emma and Grayson Tucker all of Frederick, his sisters Rogina Isaacs (Ray) of Walkersville and Robin Nelson of Wyoming, brother-in-law Larry Williams (Cathy) of Frederick and sister-in-law Alice May of Florida and other family members. In addition to his family, he also will be greatly missed by several longtime friends, including his Air Force buddies, and his wonderful caregivers all of whom were like his second family. In addition to his wife and parents he was predeceased by sisters Rachel Wachter and Rebecca Williams and granddaughter, Hannah Tucker.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD. Pastors Leo and Melissa Barnes will officiate at a private service.
