Walkersville

Janice Ditto Schwartz, 70, of Walkersville, Maryland, passed from this life on June 5, 2024 at Spring Arbor of Frederick. She was born on March 26, 1954, in Bethesda, Maryland.

She was the daughter of the late James Ditto and Julia Dawson Ditto. She attended Northwood High School in Silver Spring and Montgomery College in Rockville. She had a religious upbringing and was very active in the Methodist Youth Fellowship at Marvin Memorial Church in Silver Spring.

After graduation, Jan worked as a technical editor at IBM in Gaithersburg before embracing her role as a stay-at-home mother. Upon moving to Walkersville, MD, she spent much of her time volunteering in community organizations such as Walkersville United Methodist Church, Girls Scouts, the Frederick Woman's Civic Club, and all three Walkersville schools. She enjoyed playing cards with friends, visiting Rehoboth Beach each year, and gardening. Jan loved music, playing scrabble, and sitting outside on her porch in the sunshine. She loved hosting parties, doing puzzles, and, most of all, being a wonderful "Mimi" to her grandchildren.

Jan is survived by her husband Larry Schwartz; daughter Jaime (Colin) Stevenson; step-son Mark Schwartz; grandchildren Claire, Jack, and Luke Stevenson, and Shane Schwartz; brother Rev. James (Carol) Ditto; nieces Lisa Reiner and Cara Ditto Tiedemann; and nephew Jason Ditto.

Her family would like to offer a special thanks to friends and family who supported her over the years. They also want to thank the staff at Frederick Health Hospital, Johns Hopkins Hospital, and at Spring Arbor for providing excellent care to Jan. Donations in memory of Jan can be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Alzheimer's Association.
