Jane Givens

Jane Watman Givens, 82 of Frederick, formerly of Silver Spring, Md., died Saturday evening, November 9, 2019 at Frederick Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her family.  Born in Jersey City and Spring Lake, NJ on June 18, 1937,  she was the daughter of the late Dr. Anthony J. and Muriel Watman. Jane was a devout Catholic and member of  St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church.  A proud graduate of Brown University, she continued her education in teaching at Catholic University.  She was a special education teacher for Montgomery County Public Schools for 18 years and continued to teach in Frederick County until 2017.  JJane gave her time generously to many programs in the community, volunteering as a teacher of illiterate adults in the Montgomery County Literacy Council Program, church educational programs, and for 23 years she was a leader of Recovery Inc. which is a self-help group for those suffering from nervous disorders.  She loved animals, especially dogs, and supported many charities to help protect and care for them, as well as saving and adopting many senior dogs in need.  She loved swimming, the water, and the ocean.  A loyal and thoughtful friend, she was always thinking of others, either by prayer, sending cards and gifts, or simply calling.  We were blessed; all who got to know her and have her as a part of our lives.

Surviving are her husband Robert Benton Givens of Frederick, MD, her five children, Anthony Givens of Frederick, MD, Michael Givens and wife Anna of Frederick, MD, MaryAngela Erdle and husband Andrew of Shelby, NC, Bonnie Sammons and husband Dave of Chesapeake, VA, and Alex Givens and wife Keri of Hedgesville, WV. She was the proud grandmother of 14 and 4 great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 47 Depaul Street, Emmitsburg, MD. The family will receive friends from 12:15-1pm at the church. Interment will be private. Msgr. Reverend Paul Dudziak will celebrate.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to one of the charities that meant so much to her: The Frederick Rescue Mission, Days End Farm House Rescue, and ALS Association.
