Jane Elizabeth Stevens Dugan was called to our Lord’s side on Thursday, September 17, 2015. Family members were at her side at Sunrise Assisted Living Home in Frederick, Maryland. Jane was born in Catonsville, Maryland on November 3, 1934 of Mr. Carol G. Stevens and Elizabeth Veronica Hackett Stevens. She is preceded in death by her parents and brothers John, Philip, Michael, and Sister Mary Claire. She leaves behind to cherish the memory and celebrate her life, her sister Nancy, of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, her loving children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and many friends who were touched by her gentle care and kindness. Jane graduated from the Institute of Notre Dame High School for girls, in Baltimore, Maryland. Jane then earned her Nursing degree from the Sisters of Bon Secours, also located in Baltimore, Maryland.
After graduating from the Institute of Notre Dame, high school for girls in Baltimore, Maryland, Jane was a member of the first Registered Nurse graduating classes of the Sisters of Bon Secours in Baltimore. She then traveled to practice at the University of Columbia Medical Hospital, New York City. During that period, Jane met Ferdinand C. “Doc” Dugan III of Catonsville, who was attending the United States Naval Academy. After Doc’s graduation in June 1957, Jane and Doc were married on the 15th of that month. This marriage produced six children and 20 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Ferdinand IV having Mary Claire and Jeremy, Jeremy having Rowan Elizabeth; Jane Tiernan (Dugan) having Kelsey, and twins Meghan and Taylor; Mary Macgill (Antor) having Carli and Madison; Jennifer (Dixon) having Cassius, John, Collin, Isabelle, and Lucy; Patrick having Corey, Riley, Teague, Reid, Trinity, and Katie; and Philip having Shannon and McKenna.
Jane suspended her nursing career upon her marriage to devote her life to raising and caring for her family as a “stay at home” mother and military wife traveling to a multitude of military bases throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, and Germany. During this time she moved the family over 26 times in her 26 year career as a military wife. Jane gave birth to children in California, Pensacola, Florida, Newport and Alexandria, Virginia. During Doc’s absence from the home on military tours and assignments, she assumed all of the responsibilities associated with the care, safety, financial support, feeding, schooling and discipline required to maintain the stability of the family unit. All throughout these busy times, she never lost her passion in caring for others and supporting her family through challenges in the U S and overseas school systems, athletic activities, family crises, and religious devotion.
In 1987 Jane returned to what she liked to do professionally. She earned her recertification as a Psychiatric Registered Nurse and resumed caring for the sick at the Atlantic City Medical Center. She continued nursing in New Jersey until she retired in August of 2009 and moved to Frederick, Maryland. Jane resided at Buckingham’s Choice from October, 2009 to August, 2014. At that time, she moved into the Reminiscence Care Neighborhood at Sunrise Senior Living, also in Frederick. Jane’s passion to provide comfort, care and companionship continued as is evident by the number of lives she so preciously touched each and every day.
The family will receive friends at the viewing from 7 to 9 pm on Sunday, September 27, 2015 at the Stauffer Funeral Home (www.staufferfuneralhome.com) located at 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD 21702.
