James Lynn Potter

Mr. James Lynn Potter, 73 of New Market, died on Monday, January 26, 2009 at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

He was the husband of Phyllis Jean Scalf Potter, his wife of 47 years.

Born on March 23, 1935 in War, WV, he was the son of the late Manasseh J. and Anna Sparks Potter.

He was a communications analyst at Ft. Meade, retiring in 1991, after 38 years service. Mr. Potter served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Jim was a member of the Christ Memorial Presbyterian Church in Columbia where he served in many capacities including maintaining the church grounds, being assistant treasurer and was a church Elder.

He enjoyed fishing and gardening, but most of all loved spending time with his family and friends.

Surviving in addition to his wife are 2 sons: Derek Lynn Potter of New Market and Wendell G. Potter and friend Layla Maldonado of Columbia; 2 grandchildren: Marina Lynne Potter of New Market and Jesse B. Potter of Columbia; 5 brothers and sisters: Ida P. Preece of Chapel Hill, NC, Priscilla S. Donaldson and husband John of Sunset Beach, NC, Jerry L. Potter and wife Marie of Lady Lake, FL, Curtis W. Potter of Wallingford, CT and Helen G. Davis and husband Phil of Lavalette, WV.

Mr. Potter was preceded in death by his step-mother, Bessie H. Potter and siblings: John D. Potter, L.C. Potter, Wendell R. Potter, William G. Potter and Doris J. Cartwright.

Services: The family will receive friends from 4-5 PM on Friday, January 30, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd. in Mt. Airy where a memorial service will begin at 5:00 PM with Rev. Robert I. Long, III officiating.

A private interment will take place at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
