James (Jimmy) G. Garst, of Frederick, Maryland, went home to be with his Lord and Savior after a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, October 21, 2018. He was a devoted son, husband, father and grandfather.
Born on November 6, 1955, in Frederick, MD, he was the son of Denton and Peggy (James) Garst.
He was a loving husband to Mary Garst, his wife of 33 years.
Jimmy was a 1973 graduate of Governor Thomas Johnson High School. Following graduation, he was a dairy farmer on the family farm located on Opossumtown Pike for 26 years.
After retiring from farming in 2000 he worked for the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier until his passing. Jimmy took great pride and pleasure serving his many friends and customers in the Spring Ridge Community.
He enjoyed following the University of Maryland-College Park football and basketball teams. In his free time he also enjoyed duck pin bowling and coaching his son's Challenger Baseball team. He was a lifelong member of the Frederick Church of the Brethren, serving as a Deacon and was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class. Jimmy also enjoyed visiting shut-ins and had a passion for sharing his faith with family and friends.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Lindsey McInerney and husband Mitch of Alexandria, VA, Lisa Chakalis and husband Tony of Walkersville, MD, and Lucas Garst of Frederick, MD; dear grandson, Branch Chakalis; siblings, Linda Bruchey and husband Charles, Nancy Hawkins and husband Bill and Kenny Garst and wife Peggy Sue, all of Frederick, MD; brother in law, Bill Schnebly and wife Susie and John Schnebly and wife Pam, both of Clear Spring, MD. He is also survived by numerous nephews and a niece.
He was predeceased by his infant brother, Steven Garst and father and mother in law, Seth and Genevieve Schnebly.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Thursday, October 25, 2018 at the Frederick Church of the Brethren, 201 Fairview Avenue in Frederick, MD.
A funeral service will be held at the Frederick Church of the Brethren at 10:00 am on Friday, October 26, 2018. Pastor Lerry Fogle and Pastor Kevin King will officiate. Interment will be at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Frederick, MD.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Frederick Church of the Brethren Deacon Fund or to Community Living, Inc., 620B Research Court, Frederick, MD 21703, in honor of Lucas Garst.
